PerioPal’s Commands… ‘Call Them Irresistible’

July 30th, 2011

The irresistible power of technology  inspired expressions and abbreviations has made a huge impact on the way millions of people now communicate. “FYI” (for your information) and “LOL” (laughing out loud) are now formally recognized by the Oxford English Dictionary, one of the world’s principal English-language dictionaries

These terms may have resulted from the character limits in texts and tweets, but have since been adopted as commonly used expressions in everyday speech and print.

Graeme Diamond, chief editor of new words for the Oxford dictionary, explained “You have to show that the word has been in usage for a decent length of time and, most importantly, that the word is used and understood by a wide audience.”

In the same way, PerioPal software breaks the bounds of traditional charting with customized abbreviation and shortcut commands that make it possible to verbalize all clinical conditions as they are observed. Users have the freedom to accurately record periodontal data in any order!

Making their debut in 2002, PerioPal’s powerful commands offer proven recording efficiently by significantly reducing the number of spoken words. Sample commands are “InterBleed” (interproximal bleeding), “G3” (localized gingivitis with 3,2,3, interproximal bleeding and plaque), and “TriMesial” or “TriDistal” (Trifurcation on the Mesial or Distal furca)

Users find PerioPal’s customized commands sensible as well as irresistible stating they can’t imagine performing a periodontal  exam without them.

Oprah and PerioPal Software test “Are You Normal?”

December 17th, 2010

Have you ever wondered if the things you do are normal? The Oprah Show did a recent episode that polled people to see how they compared to others in hygiene and everyday habits. Experts talked about whether common behaviors — from weight issues to spouses watching “too much” football on TV — are really “normal.” It was an entertaining show because deep down people really like to know how they measure up.

PerioPal can weigh in on “Normal” . When presenting PerioPal at various dental gatherings, we point to  significant  differences between restorative and periodontal charting. With restorative charting, if a tooth is found healthy or ‘normal” , the chart entry is left blank. Universally, clinicians who view the  dental chart understand that the teeth with blank entries are “normal” or healthy.

In contrast, periodontal charting requires much more documentation. If the probing depths are within the normal limits, the clinicians enters six digits per tooth to document that the tooth is indeed “normal”. If the entries are  otherwise left blank, it is considered an inadequate “spot probing” exam thereby creating the risk of doubt or  “periodontal neglect”.

PerioPal has created a unique solution to this tedious and challenging method of periodontal charting. At the setup of the program,  clinicians  select probing depth values from a computerized list that matches their criteria for a “Normal” condition.  During the course of the exam when the probing depths match their criteria, they  simply say “Normal”.  PerioPal automatically records and stores the selected values as the program advances.

Although built for speed and accuracy, an unexpected bonus has been the powerful patient education opportunities resulting from using the “Normal” command during the course of the exam.  By saying “Normal”, the patient draws a clear distinction between “what is health” and “what is disease”. Ultimately, patients like to know how they measure up.

Users tell us over and over that they like and appreciate the “Normal” feature in PerioPal. Of course, we enjoy hearing great feedback… isn’t that normal?
